History, Fluxes and Rising Accommodation Trends

History, fluxes and current scenario of Indian hotel market :

• Hospitality in India is not a new concept it has been here since Mughal period and before. What bought foreign tourist to India was the vast culture, religion and natural resources. Indian kings and Emperors welcomed all the Travelers with open arms and provided accommodation in walled rest houses called as “Musafirkhana” and “Sarai” with security and food.
• Then in late eighteenth century when Britisher took over the , travel during that time was mainly for trade, politics & administration. Britishers established “Dak bungalow” with a host to prepare the food. Cantonments, railway stations, hill stations, PWD guest houses. British officers, jailors, engineers, military and administrative personal would use those accommodations.
• For the service of Britishers  and their officers latest promoters stabilized the European style hotel like Swiss and maiden in Delhi (Present Capital), Cecil in Shimla (the queen of hills) and the Grand hotel in Calcutta, and this is known as the introduction of modern hotels in india.

• In 1903, JRD Tata established the Taj hotel in Mumbai, and started the air travel facility in India being the founder of Air India company. Britishers left behind the modern hotels, containments, guest houses, and Dak Bungalows which were later taken over by other hotels or independent businessmen. Dak bungalow in Peora is example which is now a privately owned Homestay.
• After the independence in 1947 government established ITDC - Indian Tourism Development Corporation which started to encourage the hospitality industry in India by establishing excellent hotel properties in India and specifically in those places which were untouched by private Hoteliers. ITDC also promoted independent Hoteliers who offered Hotel service for every budget. With the new government came the new roads and Highways and Railways were already a gift from Britishers and these two factors increase the number of domestic tourist.
• After years of independence in 1947 while developing as a new economy on a global level travel and Hospitality have witnessed huge proportions in India. Travelling for business, , military and religion has  by time and travelers who seek culture and historical purposes come to India every year in big numbers.

• Now here in 21st century if we go all over again on Indian hotel market we see not only accommodation types but tourist have switched their taste to boat houses, Resorts, tree houses, homestays, hostels, floatels, camps and tents. The percentage of tourist has increased but the proportion of tourist staying in a hotel have witnessed a little downfall. The taste of guest and interest of tourist keeps changing by respect of time. budget travelers solo tourist adventurers trekkers photographers wanderers choose other means of accommodation over Hotel as it is comparatively cheap.
• But a downfall is just the downfall and a matter of time, to cope up with the situation  hotels have you started to offer negotiated rates which means good quality of generousity friendliness and Hospitality is not a matter of gold coins in India.
